Dongmin Kim is quickly carving out a reputation as one of the most exhilarating and flexible conductors of his generation. As the Music Director of the cutting-edge New York Classical Players (NYCP), he continues to stamp his influence on the world stage. His past and future performances are set for renowned venues like the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Herbst Theatre, Faulkner Performing Arts Center, Seoul Arts Center, and Lotte Concert Hall among others.

Since founding the NYCP in 2010, Mr. Kim has led more than 200 concerts in the NYC metro area and embarked on three international tours from Asia to South America. He completed an extensive residency at seven state universities in Arkansas and initiated a US national tour with renowned soprano Sumi Jo. In a notable accomplishment, he filled in at short notice to lead a series of concerts with NYCP, substituting for the English Chamber Orchestra's US tour.

Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Kim has had the pleasure of working alongside esteemed artists such as Miriam Fried, Donald Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian, Pamela Frank, Charles Neidich, Carter Brey, Peter Wiley, Carol Wincenc, Kun Woo Paik, HaeSun Paik, Chee-Yun, Stefan Jackiw, Jasmine Choi and Richard O'Neill.

Among Mr. Kim's standout engagements are a guest appearance with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, sold-out performances of The Magic Flute with the Seoul Arts Center Festival Orchestra, the Texas Festival Orchestra at the Round Top Music Festival Institute. He has also taken the podium with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Virginia Symphony, and Winnipeg Symphony, to name a few.

Mr. Kim had the honor of receiving the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Fellowship, an award conferred by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. As a result, he enjoyed a residency at the esteemed Salzburg Music Festival. In addition, Mr. Kim served on the conducting staff of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as a Schmidt Conducting Fellow, where he collaborated with luminaries such as Raymond Leppard, Mario Venzago, Christoph Poppen, Lynn Harrell, André Watts, Garrick Ohlsson and Lang Lang.

A passionate advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Kim has collaborated with renowned composers such as George Crumb, Samuel Adler, Harrison Birtwistle, Jennifer Higdon, Dobrinka Tabakova, Vivian Fung, Eric Nathan, and Texu Kim. Recently, he recorded a collection of chamber orchestra works by legendary composer Samuel Adler, released on Toccata Classics and earning acclaim from Pizzicato Magazine Luxembourg. He also recorded Korean Art Songs with Haeran Hong, the first Asian winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, for Warner Classics.

As an accomplished violinist, Mr. Kim has held principal viola positions, including with the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson-Thomas. As a recitalist and chamber musician, he has performed across the United States, South America, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Born in Seoul, Mr. Kim studied Orchestral Conducting and Viola at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His esteemed mentors include Kurt Masur, Janos Starker, Menahem Pressler, Alan de Veritch, Leonard Slatkin, Imre Pallo, Thomas Baldner, and David Effron.

뉴욕을 중심으로 활동하는 김동민은 2008년 케네디 센터에서 열린 내셔널 심포니 오케스트라 연주로 데뷔했다. 이후 필라델피아 오케스트라, 볼티모어 심포니, 미네소타 오케스트라, 잭슨빌 심포니, 버지니아 심포니, 샌안토니오 심포니, 플로리다 오케스트라, 인디애나폴리스 심포니, UNAM 필하모닉(멕시코), 라인랜드-팔츠 필하모닉(독일), 위니펙 심포니(캐나다) 오케스트라의 포디움에 섰고, 예술의전당 가족오페라 '마술피리'를 지휘했다. 

2009년 뉴욕클래시컬 플레이어스(NYCP)를 창단, 음악 감독/지휘자로 활동하며 현재까지 세계적인 아티스트들과 함께 약 250여 회의 콘서트를 개최했다. 그는 2019년 NYCP를 이끌고 롯데콘서트홀, 대구콘서트하우스의 월드오케스트라 시리즈 개막 공연을 맡았다. 2019년과 2021년 두 차례의 남미 투어에 이어 2023년 3월, NYCP가 잉글리시 체임버 오케스트라를 대신해 성공적인 미국 투어를 가져 큰 화제가 되었다. 11월에는 피아니스트 선우예권과 함께 동부와 서부에서 열린 다섯 차례 투어 공연이 모두 매진되는 기록을 남겼다. 또한 NYCP는 2024년 4월에는 브라운대학의 초청으로 레지던시를 가졌다. 

김동민 감독은 조수미, 백건우, 백혜선, 김지연, 최나경, 손열음, 클라라 주미 강, 선우예권, 김봄소리 등과 같은 한국을 대표하는 아티스트는 물론, 킴 카쉬카쉬안, 파멜라 프랭크, 초량 린, 미리엄 프리드, 도널드 와일러스타인, 스텔라 첸, 카터 브레이, 마크 코소워, 찰스 나이딕 등과 함께 연주했다. 

그는 AAF(미국-오스트리아 재단)과 빈 필하모닉이 선발하는 '카라얀 지휘 펠로우’로 선정되어 잘츠부르크 페스티벌에 초청되었고, 이후 인디애나폴리스 심포니의 '슈미트 지휘 펠로우'로 이 악단의 지휘 스태프로 활동했다. 레이몬드 레퍼드, 마리오 벤자고, 크리스토퍼 포펜, 랑랑, 린 하렐, 안드레 와츠, 게릭 올슨 등의 아티스트들의 연주에 참여했고, 미국 프로 교향악단의 운영 실무를 경험했다.

동시대 음악 발굴과 연주에 특별한 뜻을 가진 그는 다양한 단체들을 이끌며 지금까지 100여 작품을 초연했는데 작곡가 조지 크럼, 해리스 버스위슬, 니콜라스 바크리, 제니퍼 히그던, 도브린카 타바코바, 에릭 네이든, 클린트 니드햄, 그리고 김택수의 작품을 무대에 올렸다. 최근 런던의 토카타 레이블을 통해 발매한 세계적인 작곡가 사무엘 아들러의 체임버 오케스트라 작품을 담은 NYCP의 음반이 룩셈부르크의 전문지 피치카토 매거진의 호평을 받았다. 

김동민은 2022년 8월 라운드 탑 페스티벌에 초청되어 텍사스 페스티벌 오케스트라를 지휘했던 공연 실황이 미국의 저명한 클래식음악 플랫폼인 ‘퍼포먼스 투데이’에 선정되었고, 미국 최대 클래식음악 라디오 방송 WQXR을 통해서 방송되었다. 그는 2024년 라운드 탑 페스티벌에 재초청되어 페스티벌 오케스트라의 지휘봉을 다시 잡는다.

김동민은 인디애나 대학교 제이콥스 음악대학에서 오케스트라 지휘와 비올라를 공부했다. 제이콥스 음대 재학 중, 대학원 관현악 지휘법 수업과 올캠퍼스 오케스트라의 강사로 학생들을 가르쳤고, 오페라극장의 부지휘자로 활동했다. 그의 음악적 멘토는 쿠르트 마주어, 로린 마젤, 크리스토프 에센바흐, 레너드 슬래트킨, 구스타프 마이어, 야노스 스타커 등이며, 연세대에서는 김용윤과 최승용에게 비올라를 배웠다.

그는 다양한 경험을 토대로 국내외 연주단체와 비영리단체 컨설팅, 그리고 칼럼니스트로 활동하고 있다.
